American Cardinal Robert Prevost succeeds Late Pope Francis as the new Leader of the Catholic Church

In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, an American Cardinal has been elected to succeed the late Pope Francis, marking the first time a U.S. prelate has ascended to the papacy. The Conclave of Cardinal convened in Vatican city and selected the new pope.

After a huge expectation and waiting the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel released a plume of white smoke on Thursday the 8th of May 2025, signaling that the 133 cardinals working inside had reached a two-thirds majority to elect a new pope for the Catholic Church.

As God may have it, finally an answer came through as a new pope emerges whose name is Robert Prevost. Robert Prevost, is now Pope Leo XIV, was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955.

Robert P. earned his bachelor’s in mathematics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and went on to receive his diploma in theology from the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago.

He was later sent to Rome to study canon law at the Pontifical Saint Thomas Aquinas University and was ordained as a priest in June 1982. Later in his career, he taught canon law in the seminary in Trujillo, Peru.

While it is often said cardinal electors would always shy away from choosing a pope from the US due to America’s outsized global political influence, Robert  Prevost’s long experience in Peru may have mitigated those fears among the electors.

Congrats to the new pope Robert  Prevost and may God fill him with wisdom to lead.
